What does attrition mean?

Attrition is when an employee leaves a company for any voluntary or involuntary reason and is not replaced for an extended period of time or ever. Organizations usually increase their attrition rates to reduce their workforce for financial reasons.  Employee attrition is often confused with turnover, but it is not the same.  Turnover is when an employee leaves for any voluntary or involuntary reason and is replaced.
